Beyond the Binary

Join a panel discussion with Kaye Nicholson, Dr Adam Perchard, Katie Bastiman and Dean Conrad, as they explore portrayals of gender fluidity in the literary and allied arts – ranging from medieval manuscripts and Japanese play-scripts, through nineteenth and twentieth century classics, to contemporary writings and performance texts. Together, the panel will discuss the appearance of gender-diverse characters, evaluate variations in representation through history and between cultures, and consider what we might draw from depictions of bodies and minds that exist beyond the binary.
