What are the challenges of translating Tintin into Jèrriais? Geraint Jennings will give some insights into the work-in-progress of making these much-loved comic books available in the Island's own language, adding to the many translations that have been undertaken worldwide. What are the strategies and challenges involved in translating for the strip layout? And how to tackle the author's wordplay? Besides the discussion there will be some readings from the works.

Geraint Jennings, born in Saint Helier in 1966, spent many years in education, including teaching Jèrriais in schools. He now works for Jersey Heritage, promoting Jèrriais and providing translations. To his mind, translating is more interesting and worthwhile than doing crossword puzzles, although the satisfaction in working out a solution is probably similar. Among translations he has done are the sonnets and two plays of Shakespeare, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and poems by writers such as Robert Burns, Tennyson, Wordsworth and some lesser-known Surrealist poets. He has twice won the competition for short story in Norman, and has also won prizes and received commissions for original poetry.
