If you’re curious to know the differences between a drama script and a novel andhow to read a play, or how to get started writing your own short play, join playwright and lyricist Karen Forbes for this beginner’s introductory workshop. You will learn about script layout, theatre vocabulary and the playwright’s role, alongside useful tips for getting started and collecting ideas. This is a Level 1 session for total beginners with no, or limited, experience of writing for the stage.

Karen Forbes is a playwright, lyricist and English and Drama teacher. She studied MA Scriptwriting & Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. Her credits include: Rebellious Sisterhood (Jersey Opera House/UK tour); Edith – In the Beginning ( National Trust, Suffolk); All Mouth No Trousers (lyricist); Barbed Wire & Teddy Bears (Jersey Arts Centre, 2022) . Recent credits include Women in Theatre Lab Award (long list); Royal Shakespeare Company Storytellers project for Hamlet UK tour. Barbed Wire &Teddy Bears was performed at Jersey College for Girls in 2025 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. She is a member of Lapidus International & runs workshops in therapeutic journal writing.
